What is Web 3.0? Will it be the next Internet revolution?

Think about a different internet that predicts what I typed accurately and understands everything I am thinking? It doesn’t matter if it is voice, text, or other media; the internet knows what I want to do. With the evolution of technology, we are at a new phase of the revolution. This new evolution is called Web 3.0.

Although in its early stage, it is only a matter of time before it comes to our daily reality. Web 3.0 is the new web evolution that will intelligently make the internet process information through artificial intelligence. However, what is Web 3.0? What does it look like, and how can it benefit us?

What is Web 3.0?

We can see Web 3.0 as the upgraded version of the current Web 2.0 internet. It is the latest internet generation where apps and websites can process information intelligently using technologies such as decentralized ledger technology, Big Data, and Machine Learning. Initially, Tim Berners-Lee, the inventor of the World Wide Web, called the Web 3.0 the Semantic Web. The objective was to make the internet open, intelligent, and autonomous.

Interestingly, we can further expand Web 3.0 definition to be data that can be interconnected through a decentralized manner that can be a big leap towards the current Web 2.0. In addition, machines and users can interact with data in the Web 3.0. However, programs must understand information contextually and conceptually. Considering these, the two bases of Web 3.0 are artificial intelligence and the semantic web.

Features of Web 3.0

To understand Web 3.0, we have to look at the features of this new internet. Let’s explore the four essential features of Web 3.0.

Artificial Intelligence

By definition, machines demonstrate artificial intelligence. The Web 3.0 machines can read and decipher emotions and meaning conveyed by different data. This enables it to produce intelligent machines. While the current Web 2.0 presents comparable capabilities, it’s still mainly human-based. This opens up an avenue for corrupt behaviors, including rigged ratings, based product reviews, etc.

For example, Trustpilot, an online review platform, offers a way for consumers to review services and products. Regrettably, the company can only gather and pay people from different areas to create reviews regarding its product and services. Nevertheless, the internet requires artificial intelligence to understand and differentiate actual data from fake one.

Spatial Web and 3-Dimension Graphics

According to certain futurists, the Web 3.0 is also known as Spatial Web as it aims to bridge the gap between the physical and digital world by revolutionizing graphic technology. Furthermore, it will bring the three-dimensional virtual world into more perspective. Compared to 2-dimensions, the 3D graphics offers a different immersion level in different sectors, including gaming, e-commerce, health, real estate, and much more.

The ubiquity feature of the Web 3.0 deals with having the capacity to be everywhere simultaneously. Although Web 2.0 is already ubiquitous, Web 3.0 expands more on it. For instance, in Web 2.0, everyone can access, share and capture images as long as there is access to Facebook.

Nevertheless, Web 3.0 takes it a step further as it makes the internet accessible to everyone everywhere at any time. As time goes on, there won’t be any need for inter-connected devices as we have in Web 2.0 because the Internet of Things technology will offer a new way of connectivity.

Semantic Web

Semantic deals with studying the relationship between different words. According to Berners-Lee, the Semantic Web will allow computers to analyze several data from the internet, including transactions, content, links, etc. For example, let’s look at these two statements.

  • I love Web 3.0
  • I <3 Web 3.0

While both syntaxes are different, they have the same semantics since it deals with the emotion or meaning of the content. The application of semantics on the internet will make it easier for machines to decode emotions and meaning by analyzing data. Subsequently, people can have a better experience through improved data connectivity.

The new internet – Web 3.0 will offer a customized and personal browsing experience more smartly. It will make the internet more predictable as people search online. In addition, it will enable people to have control over their data and provide a richer experience because of the myriad of innovations.

Once Web 3.0 becomes an everyday reality, the internet will become more integrated into our daily lives and affect our behavior. Today, everything is gradually becoming connected to the Internet of Things, and it’s only a matter of time before Web 3.0 becomes the new norm. A new web evolution is coming that will intelligently process information on the internet through artificial intelligence.

What are the predictions about Web 3.0? Do you think it has the potential to revolutionize our current system? We do like to hear about anyone’s perspective regarding Web 3.0.
